Chapter 1, Page 10 — 10 of 123

To: Jian Chen Subject: (no subject)

remember that video we saw of the grains of sand vibrating on the speaker and the patterns they form

why isnt there something like that in ML

He sends it before he can second-guess himself. Before he can wonder if it makes sense, if Jian will get it, if it's even a coherent question. He just needs someone else to know that he saw something. That for a moment, the world revealed itself to him as a system of frequencies, as pure pattern, as music made visible.

His phone buzzes almost immediately:

JIAN:?

Alex smiles, pockets the phone, and keeps walking toward his next class. He doesn't know what he saw back there. He doesn't know if it means anything. But he's pretty sure, suddenly, that there's a connection between the sand on the speaker and the way neural networks learn, between vibration and intelligence, between the physical world and the digital one he's trying to build.

He'll figure it out later. Or he won't. For now, he just walks, and the sun stays warm on his face, and somewhere in the back of his mind, a grandmother he never met keeps humming a song he can't quite hear.
